Day 7 – Sunday 18th – Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5140m)
After waking up feeling like a million dollars, I gave us the go to make our way to Gorak Shep and to continue on to visit Base Camp.
We had breakfast at 0630 and were out of the hotel door at 0700 on the dot.
After some fairly aggressive hiking, we arrived at Gorak Shep at 0845. Not bad for a 2-3 hour journey.
More importantly, however, I did it. I had carried my own weight all the way up.
After a pretty sizeable breakfast, I got myself checked-in, left my bag in the room, and we headed off towards Everest Base Camp.
My porter and I also had an argument that day. I suppose it had been building from the day before when we had suddenly gone cold on his idea to go to Gokyo via the Chola Pass.
The short of it is, he didn’t want to go to Gorak Shep because he felt it was too dangerous and came up with several other reasons. I did. We agreed that when we get to the junction to head on back down to Namche Bazaar and traverse across towards the Cho La Pass, we would make a decision as to how to proceed. In my mind, I was about 80% certain I would pay him what he was owed – a 12 day minimum of $16/day plus the accommodation – then part ways. I was determined to do it.
